Gender Diversity and Equality Workshop at SGM 2020 (on Zoom)

The aim of this workshop was to raise awareness of the benefits that gender diversity, equality and inclusion bring for scientific advancement and research culture. This workshop addressed the challenges, the statistics and the initiatives aimed at improving gender equality in the Swiss (Geo)science community.

In this workshop, the “Report on gender diversity and equality in the Geosciences: an analysis of the Swiss Geoscience Meetings from 2003 to 2019” published in the Swiss Journal of Geosciences was presented by the GEODES committee members Francesca Piccoli and Giulia Guidobaldi.

WINGS campaign on Gender Diversity at SGM 2019
Daniela Rubatto (Geology, UNIBE and GEODES president) and Kathrin Naegeli (Geography, UNIBE) moderating the discussion over lunchtime
The (almost) spontaneous campaign held by a group of female geoscientists, called WINGS (Women in Geosciences) at that time, intended to create awareness and generate discussion around the gender balance and women representation in the plenary session speakers and moderating roles at the SGM.
It included the creation of flyers (below two examples) and a lunchtime discussion around broader topics of inclusion and diversity in Geosciences.
