Prof. Janet Hering holds a professorial position in Environmental Biogeochemistry at both ETH Zurich and EPFL. She is also currently director of Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology.
Abstract: The speaker has a career in both the US and Switzerland, and she experienced numerous leadership position in large international committees. As such, she gathered a broad view of the factors that affect the advancement of female scientists in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. She highlights the differences between the US and Europe, demonstrating where the barriers really are.
Prof. Frédéric Herman is a geoscientist working on the interaction between climate and Earth surface processes. He is also the rector of the University of Lausanne, after being dean of the faculty of Geosciences and Environment.
Abstract: The speaker has several year experience in dean and rector positions in the academia, where he helped developing and implementing strategies for hiring women professors. In this talk, Frédéric Herman shares his experience and the established strategies to promote equal opportunities in the recruiting procedures.
Prof. Heike Mayer holds a professorial position in Economic Geography at the University of Bern. She is also an initiator of Better Science movement.

Abstract: The speaker presents the Better Science (Academic cultures in the 21st century) initiative in the academic sector. This movement aims to switch from ‘quantity and speed’ to ‘more sustainability, diversity, inclusion and equal opportunities‘ in research, teaching and administration.
